jobs after MSc / PhD Bioinformatics

HI!

I am right now working on a little project which encompass statistics about what students do after their bioinformatics degree.
I thought you might help me to get an overview.
Please can you post what you worked after you came out of a bioinformatics course!

Thanks for all your help!
Cheers,
Margarete

I'm also doing/failing a PhD (as you probably know already)!

But i'm not quite in the hating it phase yet - give me a month or two more (and the stress of the deadline to set in)!

Hi Margarete,

after finishing my degree back in Spain, I started my PhD almost two years ago.

Hi Margarete,

Luckily I don't have the stress of doing/failing a PhD. Instead I have the stress of a 10 month database development contract (plus the deadlines and expectant directors that brings) to worry about. Hope your project goes well.

I am working on a EU project which is into study of complex diseases by genotyping millions of SNPs and carrying out GWA (genome wide association) study and analysis.

After being unemployed for several months after finishing my MSc Bioinformatics, I am about to start work for the European Patent Office in The Hague. I will be working as an Analyst Programmer, working on a project with the European Bioinformatics Institute to develop a database of biological patent information. Just got to learn some Dutch and some Java before I get there (same thing???).

I worked for a year in bioinformatics and then got a PhD in data integration and analysis. I'm loving it :-)

Hi
After completing my MSc in Bioinformatics from University of Abertay Dundee I am working as a Bioiformatics Faculty at North South University, Bangladesh. Three months dissertation at Moredun Research Institute, Edinburgh gave me hands on experience on genomic annotation using different bioinformatics tools on windows and linux environment. I would be grateful if anyone can help me out to carry out my PhD in the field of Bioinformatics
Cheers

Hi,

I studied an MRes in Bioinformatics and my project supervisor offered me a job as a junior RA working in a Neurology department. I'm currently developing a tool for candidate gene identification using machine learning. I also offer help to other members of the department. I have worked in this position for 18 months now and I'm condidering whether to do a PhD or go into Industry.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated because currently I'm totally confused about what route to take.

I will apply for Msc degree in bioinformatics for the 2007-2008 education term.
Probably I will stay in a london-based university like kings ,queen marry, birbeck or brunel ?
Could anybody value these institutions in terms of bioinformatic education and job prospectus.
I am an overseas student who wish to work in a bioinformatician position after graduation in UK.
So I want to ask that : how is employment condition for overseas graduates especially in the bioinformatics field ? Is london a good place for subject or not ? if not ,where should I go ? how is scotland ???(becouse they give 2 year workpermit after degree -fresh talent initiative)
do bioinformatician employers sponsor a work permit for you,if you are better enough?
or is it really diffucult like everyone says ?
is there anybody who can speak about bioinformatic jobs for overseas graduates ?
I am firmly sure about the subject ..but my main concern is getting a job as an overseas student who would start competition with a major disadvantage (work permit ).Becouse in my country there is no sufficient job offers(almost none ) for bioinformatics graduates , I will have to stay in uk.it is a big risk for me!!!
do not forget we pay more than 10.000 pound tution fee for only one year and plus living expenditure !! bad investment or good investment ?
thanks for responses in advance..

I would not recommend u to do a masters in bioinformatics..there r no jobs out there in london...unless u go scotland...but i think bioinformatics is a waste of degree...i did my msc in london..n am still not getting a job in this field..wat a waste of time..

Not many bioinformatics jobs in London? That's not surprising - apart from a couple of the better universities there's not much science going on in London. But, elsewhere in the UK there's plenty of jobs. As well as the ones advertised on this site, there's ...

jobs.ac.uk: 46 jobs matching 'bioinformatics' currently available in UK universities. OK, not all are suitable for a fresh MSc graduate, but a lot of them are.

naturejobs.com: 289 jobs matching bioinformatics listed on there today, 57 of which are in the UK.

You'd be hard pressed to find another area of science with quite so many opportunities at the moment.

Hello Mag.,
The most anoying thing is that, Universities keep offering and presenting bioinformatics studies as a prominent future job.
whilst graduates from these universities can't even find a job after completing their course. i am so angry for chosen this pathway and do encourage any new comers to do a good reaserch on Msc before taking the decision.

What some people don't realize is that every bioinformatics course is different, and some are more well known and respected by employers than others. Definitely, it is important to do your research before you sign up to a particular course. Don't just believe the university when they say the course is great - think about whether the content of the course is relevant to employers, and check where the alumni from that course have ended up working.

Hi,
I agree with you.

What about the job prospects for MSc Applied Bioinformatics course at Cranfield University? Are there any alumni out here to share their experiences?
Thanks.
Best wishes,
Dr Mani

This is the most boring topic ever, stop whining about not having a job.

Nobody can be sure of a job after any course!

And as someone said above there are jobs out there.

I've done an MSc in Bioinformatics and its served me well

You people need to ask yourself why you aren't getting jobs... i suggest doing a PhD

Congrats and Good luck for your research efforts !!!.
I am a MSc Graduate in Bioinformatics.I am working as a research fellow.
Well ..Bioinformatics opportunities are not that bad as so many have quoted at least in the research sector. But I do admit that ,industry openings are not much in India compared to other countries.Even if there are some , no job announcements are being made.I chose this field knowing the pit-falls ..So its all an individual's perspective and their experience.

It works well for me ..because this is all what I wanted !!!!

best wishes to all bioinformaticians..
