Job Description:
The Senior Software Engineer will have a responsible role in the maintenance and development of the databases in the EBI Sequence database group, which include the EMBL nucleotide sequence database, the UniProt protein sequence database, and InterPro, an integrated resource of protein families, domains and sites, IntAct and Integr8.

The responsibilities of the Senior Software Engineer are the design, implementation, documentation, debugging, testing, and support of various software components. The post holder will design and implement Oracle applications and set up a database reporting environment. (S)he will develop novel solutions to computational problems, which may involve both algorithmic as well as software architecture issues. The incumbent will report regularly to the project coordinators to ensure good information flow and ensure that the coordinator maintains an overview of the tasks.

Qualifications and Experience:
The successful candidate should ideally already have worked for a significant time as database programmers. Therefore, a degree in a relevant field or proven professional experience with Perl, C, C++, and/or Java is required. Knowledge of Oracle and SQL is strongly preferred. We are looking for a candidate with good knowledge of standard good software development and project planning practices. The role demands a proactive attitude and excellent communication and people skills as well as the ability to liaise with appropriate members of staff within other groups.

Contract:
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
