We are looking for a Scientific Programmer to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory – European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. We are a leading international provider of cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of Bioinformatics.
The BBI-PBD submission and processing software suite is used in the high-quality curation of PDB entries that is essential in establishing the PDB and MSD databases as world-leading sources of protein information. The members of the wwPDB group are working towards a single deposition and processing system and require a C++ programmer familiar with F77 and F90 to both contribute to this collaborative system by re-writing older fortran software and to integrate processing procedures with an XML I/O layer independent of the algorithms. The postholder will work within an international group and work closely with a Java/XML GUI developer and the curation staff to ensure that a complete working system is built in a sustainable manner.
Applicants must hold a degree in Computer Science or have a proven record in software development. Ideally, you will have a minimum of 3 years experience in programming in C++ and proficiency in fortran, covering algorithm development and applications. A background in large integrated software packages and maintenance and experience in Linux/Unix and Emacs are essential as are good communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
Benefits include 30 days annual leave, a health care and pension scheme and support to staff with dependent children. There is a Campus bus service running between Cambridge and Saffron Walden, car-share schemes, an on-site restaurant, café, gym and active sports and social scene.
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
The closing date for the post is 30 September 2007. We anticipate a start date of 1 November 2007.
