Research Associate / Bioinformatician
Genomic Analysis and Data Coordination for European Xenopus tropicalis Research Groups.
We are looking for a bioinformatician to start as soon as possible, to take over the primary role in implementing the bioinformatics components of the European X-OMICS project: "coordinating integrated and functional genomics for understanding normal and pathological development in Xenopus tropicalis."
The work will involve analysing genomic scale data, using comparative genomics, building databases, maintaining a web site, attending and helping to organise European coordination workshops and liaising with other Xenopus groups in Europe.
You will need to be familiar with basic sequence biology (genes, mRNA and proteins, codons, open reading frames, cDNA, etc), and have good working skills in various computing languages, preferably C++ and SQL. You should feel comfortable working with most major operating systems.
The successful candidate is likely to be either a PhD level biologist with well developed informatics skills, or a computational-based scientist with a strong interest in and reasonably well-developed knowledge of molecular biology. An extremely able recent graduate with strong motivation to succeed in this discipline may be considered. Candidates should have some practical experience of applying computational methods in real situations. Other useful skills would be: programming in Java, Perl, shell scripts and batch files, database design and implementation, web-based programming, large scale data mining and accessing public data collections.
We shall invite good candidates for interview as soon as possible and will endeavour to make the appointment at the first opportunity.
For further information contact Dr Mike Gilchrist (m.gilchrist@gurdon.cam.ac.uk).
Applicants should send a CV and the names and contact details of two referees to Juliet Barrows at The Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge CB2 1QN (j.barrows@gurdon.cam.ac.uk). An application form (available from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/personnel/forms/pd18/) should also be completed and submitted to the Administration Secretary at the same address.
