Senior Computer Programmer at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

Position Senior Computer Programmer
Organisation The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute
Location Hinxton, Cambridge

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute leads the world in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

Now is an exciting time for the study of human genetic variation. We are entering a new era in which genes responsible for common human diseases can be identified by testing several hundred thousand markers across the human genome and the variation in and around such genes can be examined in detail. As a world leader in human genomics and genome informatics, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is now applying large-scale genotyping, sequencing and related technologies to the identification and study of genes underlying complex traits.

The Variation Informatics team works closely with laboratory groups, providing experimental design pipelines, data exchange mechanisms for collaborators, robust tracking systems for large scale projects and analysis and visualisation tools. We are seeking an experienced programmer to join us in the further development and maintenance of the tracking and data management and analysis systems used in the DNA collections laboratory.

The ideal candidates for this position will have extensive experience of programming in a UNIX/LINUX environment; they will be familiar with all stages of the software development process and will be capable of planning their work to deliver applications in a timely manner. In-depth experience of RDBMS and strong PERL programming skills are essential. Good communication skills are required as the position involves talking with laboratory scientists to define their needs and working with others to deliver appropriate software. A background or interest in the biological sciences would also be an advantage.

We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website http://www.sanger.ac.uk/careers/jobs/
