The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute leads the world in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease. With the completion of the human and mouse genome sequence, attention is now turning to the functional analysis of genes in mammals. The generation of gene knockouts in the mouse is one approach to perform such functional studies. Recently large scale international projects have been started to knock out mouse genes in a systematic and coordinated manner. The High Throughput Gene Targetting Team is a member of two such projects and performs a central role in each project to realise the goals of knocking out over half the gene in the mouse genome in the next few years.
